Google My Business (GMB)
Google My Business (GMB) is like a free ad that exists in the Google search results. However, your Google My Business listing may or may not show up in the Google search results. It’s more likely to show up in the Google My Business search results instead. These results are based on the map of your surrounding area or the area that you specify in your search.
If you were to optimize your Google My Business, there is a good chance that you can show up higher than your competition in the Google My Business listings results. One way to increase your rankings in Google is by choosing the right categories and attributes for your business.

Google my business: categories
When you choose categories for your Google My Business listing, this helps place your business among the search results that are most likely to serve the customer the most. For example, for a company like us that offers SEO and marketing services, we would need the following categories:
Marketing agency
Advertising agency
Internet marketing service
Search engine optimization service
Web design agency
Social media marketing agency
Content marketing agency
Digital marketing agency
Email marketing service
Pay-per-click advertising agency
If a company like ours didn’t enter these categories into our Google My Business, we wouldn’t show up as high in the search results as other competition in our niche. It’s also important not to put all the categories for a given niche at the start. At the start, you should focus on one or two categories. This helps give you a boost on these categories.

When choosing your categories, it’s important to be precise with how you categorize your GMB. It can be tempting to enter categories for businesses that are only closely related to yours, but don’t do this. Google is smart and will slowly work out that the categories you picked may not be suitable and could close down your GMB for what it calls “quality issues.”
In addition to using categories for your Google My Business, you can also enter attributes that describe specific features or services offered by your business. Attributes help you add additional information for your potential customers to help them make more informed decisions when they decide to start contacting businesses.
Here are common attributes that you might consider including on your GMB listing:
Accessibility features: If your business has features that make it more accessible to people with disabilities, such as wheelchair ramps or audio descriptions, you can select these attributes to let potential customers know.
Services: If you run a takeout or eat-in restaurant, it’s important to list attributes such as takeout, delivery, or catering. If your listing has these attributes listed and another similar business doesn’t, then it’s more likely that your business will show higher than your competition, and also that your customers will order from your listing instead of other listings that don’t seem to offer these things.
Google my business: Amenities
Many venues offer amenities such as free Wi-Fi, outdoor seating, or a playground. These types of attributes are easy to select and again, help improve your rankings and your customers’ ability to choose the right business.
Google my business: Highlights
Not all businesses are the same, and you may want to position yourself differently, so highlighting things such as being female-led or offering vegan options is likely going to stand out to your customers.
Google my business: Attributes and SEO
As you can imagine, having filled out attributes on your Google My Business is good for SEO. For example, if your customers want to eat at your restaurant and they search for “spicy food near me with disabled access,” having filled out your attributes properly and given that you offer disabled access will obviously mean your Google My Business listing will show up higher than your competition.
In conclusion, making sure that you have filled out all the categories and attributes on your Google My Business listing helps your listing rise above your competition, which ultimately will lead to more traffic and sales.
